Welcome to BABY BIG HAIR BLAST where we highlight “Big Hair” artisans and their muses:) Up next to the BBH stage is Mommy Jacqueline and her beautiful daughter Chelsea. Now look closely… do you see any resemblence to this old school child actor??…..
That’s right. Chelsea is also the daughter of actor Shavar Ross, most commonly known by his supporting character role as “Dudley” on Diff’rent Strokes. I mean really people, the RESEMBLANCE?!?! And I thought BBH was her Daddy’s twin!! OK, so I’ve had the pleasure of ‘chatting down’ with Mommy Jacqueline to get the real deal on maintaining and styling those thick, precious, soft curls. Well I just can’t take it anymore… Let’s dig right in, shall we??
BBH: What is her hair-washing routine?
I wash her hair with a mild shampoo and conditioner bi-weekly and co-wash in between. I recently started using Shea Moisture’s organic line [BBH: Everybody is raving about this line!!]. I love the Curl Enhancing Smoothie for thick curly hair. I use it as a leave in and apply it to damp hair (water bottle spritzer). It seems to keep her hair hydrated. I also use a light conditioning gel around the hairline (Eco Styling Gel with Olive Oil). I top off with a oil sheen spray.
BBH: What do you find are the challenges for styling Chelsea’s hair and how do you over come them?
Keeping it manageable and coming up with quick cute styles for school. I don’t always have time to style it right before school [BBH: who are you tellin’?]. I usually style it before bed and wrap it with a satin pink scarf. I made a conscious decision to avoid straightening her hair with heat appliances or chemicals. Her hair is pretty thick and tightly wound and can be a challenge to comb out at times unless I use a detangler. I have been using a great detangler by Taliah Waajid called Kinky, Way, Natural Easy Herbal Comb out. [BBH: YES! That is good stuff isn’t it?]
BBH: How does Chelsea feel about her hair??
I remember the first day of school, she came home and said one of her friends did not want to play with her because her hair wasn’t straight. It not only affected her but also me. I had a good talk with her about it and showed her the Sesame Street video “I love my hair”. She now understands that her crown is glorious and is nothing to be ashamed of. [BBH: Amen and great job Mommy]
BBH: Tips for wearing BIG HAIR or fav “quick” styles.
I’m a little old school when it comes to hair styles. I like to keep it simple. Sometimes I pull it back, and wear it in a puff. She loves hair bands. She’ll pick out one to match her outfit. Other times I simply part it down the middle and make two Afro puffs. Again the Shea Moisture products seem to work great with easy styles like this. Then of course, naturally combed out after a fresh wash and leave in conditioner. Her photo featured in Black Celeb Kids is probably our favorite big hair “quick” style. That style was achieved by spritzing her hair with water and applying Shea Moisture’s Curl Enhancing Smoothie, working it in really good and finger combing it and we’re out the door! [BBH: Nice]
BBH: Last but not least, anything you or Chelsea would like to share about haircare in general or experiences.
Chelsea just wants everyone to know that she REALLY does loves her hair just the way it is! Keeping it real and natural!
Big BBH thanks to Mommy and Chelsea for participating! Isn’t Chelsea just a DOLL!?! Golly, what a beautiful, sweet, sweet girl. And doesn’t Mommy put it down for that baby?!? LOVE the encouragement and that precious mommy-daughter time. HHHhhhhhh, just beautiful.
