Go’Head Baby, Be Curly!!!

Welcome to Baby Big Hair Blast where we highlight big hair artisans and their muses:) Up next to the BBH stage is Mommy Kelli and her Little J, and I must say this is one true Baby Big Hair! Look at those delightful twists (our all time fav protective style)! Dare I count? Whew doggies!! Well, I had to track down this Mommy to get the scoop on the meticulous hands who perfected such a work of hair art and just a glimpse of the cutie underneath all that hair! Well, let’s get to it, shall we??

BBH: What is your hair washing routine?
I usually shampoo twice a month and co-wash twice a month. Sometimes this changes according to weather and play. I prefer to treat Little J’s hair with coconut oil the night before I shampoo her hair. I also started doing a ACV rinse on Little J’s hair once a month when I shampoo too. I have been very happy with adding the ACV rinse to our washing routine. I have found Aubrey’s Organics Honey Suckle Rose to be the best conditioner/rinse to use for Little J’s hair after washing it or for using for co-washing. [BBH: I love ACV rinses, p-yew on the initial smell, but is does dissipate]

BBH: What do you find are the challenges for styling Little J hair and how do you over come them?
I think one of the biggest challenges is that I am super SLOW at doing hair. I have learned that I can’t pay attention to how quickly other Mom’s can detangle and style their little girls hair. It used to drive me crazy to hear how they only spent 20 minutes detangling and it still takes me 45 minutes to an hour [BBH: Yyyyyup!]. There were times I would be in tears that I couldn’t do Little J’s hair faster. But I have learned to let it go and to ignore the clock! [BBH: Hakuna Matata!!]

BBH: How do you entertain Little J when styling her hair?
Right now entertaining has been pretty simple at our house. We do not watch TV unless it is hair day so watching the SPROUT channel and special movies keeps her pretty occupied. I also give her snacks that take longer to eat like almonds, apples, carrots, etc… We take many breaks too. [BBH: YES! we do movies on hair days and a nice big lolipop! All the stuff she would not otherwise have privileges of:) I can testify that it actually works!] Continue reading →

Booyah!   Just a few favs…

Go’Head Baby!

Welcome to Baby Big Hair Blast where we highlight big hair artisans and their muses:) Up next to the BBH stage is Mommy Jessica and cute & cuddly Kayla. Just look at that HAIR!! EEK!! I so love it; alllllllll of it!! This should be a good one. Lets get to it shall we????

BBH: What is your hair washing routine?
I wash using only shampoo and leave in conditioner once week, then the next week I’ll do the whole nine yards: Shampoo, conditioner, deep conditioner and leave in. I would like to deep condition every week but she gives me such a hard time about washing her hair, I’ve tried everything and she will not budge. I spare myself the trouble of going through that every week. Hopefully it will get better when gets she’s older. [BBH: I will testify that it does get better, BUT hair grows longer; basically..”You Can’t wiiiiin Chile’ You Can’t Get Out of the GA-A-A-A-ME!]

BBH: What do you find are the challenges for styling her hair and how do you over come them?
The biggest challenge is finding the TIME [BBH: Say that!]! I’m a full time working mom and I’m also an active member in my church that meets 3 times a week. Sometimes I only have 2 hours between church and work so I have to leave 2 of my only free nights to do her hair. If that doesn’t happen, it has to be done Sunday before the work week starts again. If I don’t braid or twist her hair, I’ll have to fix her hair every morning which I don’t like to do because I get to work late. I need at least 2 hours to braid or style. [BBH: OH GAAAA! sniff, sniff. YES! I so understand!! sniff sniff:(:( Can we just make it go away and skip to the “fav product” part??]

BBH: How do you entertain Kayla when styling her hair?
I got her a personal DVD player and she watches her favorite movie (Robots) while I style her hair. After about over an hour she’ll start getting impatient, I’ll put on Nick Jr. I always have snacks, drinks and toys nearby. The less interruptions the sooner I get done. I’ll let her take a break if its taking more than 2 hours. If its way past 2 hours I’ll leave whatever is not done for the next day. [BBH: I know that’s right. Gotta have a plan, gotta have a plan! Get it Mommy!]

BBH:What are your fav products?
I’m a product junkie [BBH: Hi, I too am a product junkie, hhhhh] but for now I’ve been sticking with Kinky Curly for styling after washing. To wash and deep condition I use Garnier avocado products.

BBH: How does Kayla feel about her hair??
She is still kind of young to show any special interest in her hair being that she’s only 28 months. I do tell her that she looks pretty and make her look at herself in the mirror when I’m done styling her hair. She shakes her head to make her hair move, then she smiles. Judging by that action, I say she loves her hair lol. [BBH: Awhhh, lil’Kayla:)]

BBH: Anything else you think folks would like to know about Kayla?
Kayla loves to draw, animals, books and music. Our plan for this summer is to go to the Bronx Zoo, the Manhattan Children’s Museum and Sesame Place ;-] [BBH: Ooo supa-talented and fun, sounds like not a dull moment!!]

Awhhhhhh.  Thanks for participating Mommy Jessica and Kayla.  What an absolute SWEET PEA!  Just oodles of yumminess and all that glorious hair and fullness thereof… Whew!  Just Yummy.  Expecting many things from this one:)

Go ‘Head Baby!

Welcome to Baby Big Hair Blast where we feature hair artisans and their muses:).  Up next to the BBH stage is Mommy Tavia of Goldilocks*n*Me – yes I said Goldilocks*n*Me, as in BBH Blast I Goldilocks*n*me (yes we can do that, LOL!), and her supasweet fella “Lil Bro”.  Now I didn’t even have to tell you who’s child this was cuz CLEARLY Lil Bro is the spitting image of his big sis!!  Is it possible to have a younger twin?!?!?!

Anywho, after seeing her tearing up her daughter’s gorgeous curls (I mean really, see her stupid gallery here, you must “like” her blog on FB to see it, but TRUST!),  just had to “chat down” with Mommy to get the real deal on styling Lil Bro’s curly fro. Well, we’ve been down this road before, so let’s just get to it shall we?

BBH: What is your hair washing routine?
I wash Lil Bro’s hair once a week.  We let the conditioner sit for about 5 minute before rinsing.  I recently gave Lil Bro his first pre-poo with EVOO. It was dreamy!  His hair was so super soft, it felt like baby hair! [BBH:  Ooo, You do EVOO?!?  just had to say that, ha!]

How do you keep Lil Bro’s hair moisturized?
I recently discovered the Shea Moisture line [BBH: yes, yes, Shea Moisture products..] and have been using the Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie on Lil Bro.  So good!  It really defines his curls without making them crunchy.  I’ve also used Kinky Curly Curling Custard.  When his daddy does his hair he uses La Belle gel or La Bella, whatever it’s called, lol.  We’re workin on dad 😉 [BBH: Well Go’Head Daddy!]

BBH: How does Lil Bro feel about his hair?
Lil Bro loves his hair 🙂  He’ll ask me to do his hair.  He’ll check himself out in the mirror, lol.  Sometimes he’ll grab the spray bottle and spray one spot on the top of his head till it’s sopping drippin’ wet and tell me he’s ready to go!

BBH: Fav styling products these days?
I use a spray bottle of conditioner and water to wet his hair in the morning then add product.  I am thoroughly impressed with Shea Moisture [BBH:  Uhm, No surprise there…].  I use the Curl and Style Milk on GDL and for both of my boys I use the Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie.  Daddy’s normally in charge of the boys’ hair but since I’ve recently found these products I’ve been spending lots more hair time on the boys.

BBH: What are your thoughts on cutting his hair?
I normally cut his hair often, we usually keep it short.  Like maybe no more than 1/2 inch long.  I decided to grow it out this summer just to see what it would look like.  I’ve seen boys with some pretty awesome BIG HAIR [BBH: Yes lawd] and I think it might be fun to see what it would look like at a longer length.  Big Bro refuses, so Lil Bro is currently my guinea pig.  Good thing he loves getting his hair combed! [BBH:  (Gasp!) NO FRO?!?!  Say it ain’t so Big Bro!!….(tears welling up) OH GAAAAA!!!!]

BBH: Anything you would like to share about haircare in general, styling and/or experiences?
I would say, boys’ hair needs love too, lol!  Just because you’re gonna cut their hair every month or 6 weeks doesn’t mean you don’t need to take care of it.  I’ve seen a real turnaround in both my boys’ hair, especially after the pre-poo and I’m glad to give their hair just as much TLC as Goldilocks 🙂 [BBH: Well spoken and good job Mommy:)]

Remind us again… What is the inspiration behind your blog Goldilocks*n*Me?
I started my blog basically because I found all of these hair care blogs around May of this year. I started trying some of the hairstyles. Then I was wanting to take pictures of my little “achievements” in doing all these new styles that I never thought I could do. In following these blogs I realized that our hair care routine was basically non-existent. That’s when our haircare journey began. Needing a place to document all my newfound knowledge I was compelled to start a blog (and FB page). I plan to make an album for GDL when she gets older so she’ll always remember our amazing “summer of hair.” :)[BBH: Huh..I guess I never thought of it that way!]

Thanks again Mommy Tavia and Lil Bro for participating. Isn’t that Lil Bro just a basket of AWHHHHS!!!  Lil’sweetie:)  And oowee,  I feel a Blast Trilogy coming on with “Big Bro” in a few more inches.  Now say it with me, GROW YOUR FRO, BIG BRO!! GROW YOUR FRO BIG BRO!!  Well, don’t forget to stop by Goldilocks*n*Me for furious hairstyles and tips for your little ones. Golly, all those purdy babies?!?!  HHhhhhh.  I can’t STAND IT!! I’m out.

Welcome to BABY BIG HAIR BLAST where we highlight “Big Hair” artisans and their muses:) Up next to the BBH stage is Mommy Brooke of Untrained Hair Mom and her deliciously cute daughter “D”. Now aren’t those swingin’ curls just Deeeeelightful?!?! Well, we were fortunate enough to “chat down” with this busy mommy and get the 411 on this lil’cutie beauty and all that hair. Well what are we waiting for? Let’s get to it shall we?!?!

BBH: What is your hair washing routine?
D’s hair is shampooed once a week with an all natural shampoo. We condition with Bee Mine Avocado Cream Conditioner. For detangling I use my fingers then a wide tooth comb, adding our favorite detangler CUSH Uncoiled [BBH: mmHHHmm… will be looking that up]. Once her hair is detangled and moisturized I either style it or band it or braid it to keep it from tangling again and style it the next day. Throughout the week I detangle, moisturize, and style her hair as needed. Some styles last longer and some require more maintenance than others. [BBH: Oh yes, you can say that!]

BBH: What do you find are/were the challenges for styling D’s hair and how do/did you over come them?
My biggest challenge has definitely been learning to cornrow, [BBH: HHhhhh – YESSSSSS!!!, the blasted CORNROW!!] her hair is thick and curly, but it is fine and tangles up so easily. I find it hard to create nice, neat cornrows. Being patient, not rushing it and taking the time to practice has definitely helped improve the cornrowing challenge. [BBH: Sniff, sniff..Okayyyyy ..sniff, imma keep trying Untrained…sniff, sniff, imma keep trying…]

BBH: How do you entertain D when styling her hair?
Movie and popcorn are her favorite when it comes time to style her hair. [BBH: Classic]

BBH: What are your fav products these days?
We only use all natural products. We love products made by Bee Mine, I find they work the best and keep her hair in tip top shape. Our favorites have to be the Luscious Moisturizer and Curly Butter. [BBH: Note taken, thx!]

BBH: How does D feel about her hair??
She has really started to love her hair, before our hair mission began she did complain about it and wish for straight hair, but I nipped that in the bud and have taught her to embrace her hair because it is beautiful just the way it is! [BBH: That’s right Mommy!]

BBH: Tips for wearing BIG HAIR or fave “quick” styles?
Wash n Go’s [BBH: Mmhhmm, i.e. BIG HAIR..], braid outs, twist outs, all with cute headbands, bows or flower clips. D loves the classic pigtail braids, which are quick and easy. She also favors a poofy, side ponytail, our favorite way to achieve that is to run the Tangle Teezer through her already detangled hair and..”POOF”! [BBH: Whew! Yes honey! Now sing it with me…BIG HAIR on da’side! – go to church– BIG “HUR” on ‘daaaaaaaaaa (clap!) SSSSSIIIIIIIIIIDE!]

BBH: Last but not least, what is the inspiration behind your blog, Untrained Hair Mom?
My quest for natural hair care information and products has lead us on an ever greater journey; learning about harmful ingredients in hair products has forced me to be more consciences about all products used on my families hair and skin and in our home. We use our blog to give insight to a little greener living by providing our readers with reviews and information on natural/eco-friendly products, oh and lots of fun hairstyles. [BBH: Go BIG HAIR, Go GREEN!]

Well it’s safe to say I thoroughly enjoyed this blast, LOL! Thanks Mommy Brooke and “D” for participating. What a gorgeous little sweet pea!!! Are you kidding me? Do you not see that smile right there?!?!?! HHhhhh, cutie:) So glad she’s grown to love her hair; WHO WOULDN’T?!?! Good job Mommy!! Please check out Untrained Hair Mom and their FB page on the regular for fantastic tips, styles, give aways, hair and skin reviews, green living and more. I just HEART it!!

Go’Head Baby…and Go GREEN!!

BBH has been wearing braids for a few weeks now. We shared with you how unravel braids and retouch as needed via our Three Strands of Separation video. Now we’d like to share how to restyle braids w/a fresh look. In this video we show you have to achieve wavy or “crinkly” braids by simply setting the hair over night.

TECHNIQUE: Braiding box braids to scalp to achieve wavy/crinkle effect, creating a fresh new look with braids.

PRODUCTS USED: Water bottle mixed with Kinky-Curly Knot Today; Queen Helene “Royal Curl” Curl Smoothing Oil, Queen Helene “Royal Curl” Curl Shaping Creme .

TOOLS USED: Alligator clips for sectioning off hair, small bands and sleep cap.

STEP BY STEP: Section off hair with clips; lightly spritz with water mix; apply oil by rubbing into hands and massage into braids by pressing them between hands; Top with gel/styling creme and reseal ends as you go; Braid box braids to scalp, and band about an inch from bottom, reseal ends as needed. Cover with sleep cap at night and take down in the AM.

Hair looks fresh and so clean, clean! This is perfect for stretching those summer braids or twists a few more days while you get the kiddos ready for school. Enjoy and let us know what you think!!

Ahhh yes! I remember it like yesterday… stumbling into the kitchen early saturday morning, pulling up my little brown and white chair, bowl of cereal in hand and watching Jackson 5ive cartoon repeats. I still jam to J5 classics every now and then and best believe BBH is right there with me (cuz She’s a Dancin’ Machine)! Quiet at kept, I was lil’MJ in a jr. high performance and brought the house down with Ben! No autographs please, LOL!

Well folks, doesn’t get much better than this, 5 heads of BIG HAIR. HHhhhh. The dayz. Never Can Say Goodbye…

Be Curly!

This was one of the 1st tutorials I ever used on BBH’s hair. Love Lisa Akbari, the self proclaimed “Hair Doctor.”  Her tutorials are fabulouuuuus (in my best Oprah voice)! This is a quick prep for that Sunday style  or it’s great for when that defined curly fro is not so defined anymore but you still want that BIG HAIR.  In summation, you two strand twist on dry hair, roll the twists using your fingers and tuck.  BBH slept with her night cap and I took them down in the AM. I’m almost certain back then I used a mix of Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk and Kinky-Curly’s Tiny Twirls Styler (but don’t hold me to it). Isn’t it precious?  Give it a try on your BBH and let us know the results!

Go ‘Head Baby, Be Curly!
