Welcome to “Baby Big Hair Blast” where we highlight BIG HAIR artisans and their muses:) Up next to the BBH stage is Mommy Kimberly and her beautiful daughter Jazzy, and OWEE “Jazzy” fits her to a “T”. ^^^That smile and BIG HAIR?? OHGAAAA! I’m meltiiiiiiing <>. We had the opportunity to “chat down” with Mommy Kimberly to get the scoop on that purdyl baby and gawgeous BIG HAIR. Well lets jump on in shall we???
BBH: What is your hair washing routine?
I usually wash her hair every two weeks. She’s one of those lucky people who can not wash their hair for days and days and it still smells as fresh as wash day. We use different shampoos, Yes to Carrots & Dudu-Osum African Black Soap [BBH: O_o Dudu?!?! LOL, you had to see that one coming, smh..] are the ones we use most often. Right now, she’s most comfortable washing her hair in the tub, but hopefully that’ll change soon. It’s hard on Mommy’s back. 🙂 [BBH: Gloreh! The days of washing BIG HAIR in the tub…OWEE! We pray your strength Mommy!]
[BBH: One of our fave frotos!! She is such a doll ]
BBH: What do you find are the challenges for styling Jazzy’s hair and how do you over come them?
The challenge is mostly mine. [BBH: SAY THAT!] I had been relaxed since I was six years old, so I had no idea how to take care of natural hair. Luckily, I found a few websites like this one that helped me tremendously. Plus the fact that I’ve since gone natural and taking care of my own hair has also taught me a lot about caring for hers. [BBH: Awhh, Thank you so much! Truly honored to have helped in your journey. Practice makes perfect!]
[BBH: Hi sweet babygirl!!]
BBH: How do you entertain Jazzy when styling her hair?
She’s an iPad girl. [BBH: Ah yessssss] So, I just make sure she has some headphones and her favorite apps and before you know it, we’re done. Plus, I give her a treat (or two) if she’s doing a really good job sitting still. [BBH: Treat’em riiight – Treat’em gooood (ode to Chub Rock, LOL! Hhhhh..smh at showing my age… THAT WAS MY JAM DOH!!!)]
[BBH: Note to self. THAT^^^ is BIG HAIR!!]
BBH: What are your fave products these days?
I’m a product junkie so I’m always on to something new. 🙂 [BBH: *queues music* You Got a Friend In Me] Right now, we’re big on Curl Junkie products. Everything from their line seems to work well on her hair. Reve Essentials moisturizing Creme or Oyin Hair Dew are our daily moisturizers. Sometimes I’ll water them down a bit to get even more moisture. And for sealing and doing twists, we use Naturalista Cosmetics Juicy Leave In – it gives her hair awesome shine and keeps it moisturized for days. [BBH: OHGAAA! SLOW DOWN!! Hhhhh, need to catch my breath lawd. Is it hot in here??!? WHEW!! All that sounds great to ME!!]
How does Jazzy feel about her hair??
She loves her hair…now. She loves Beyonce and when she was 2 1/2 or 3 she went through a phase where she wanted “down hair like Miss Beyonce”. [BBH: She’s got the fierceness down KNOW THAT!] Add to that the fact that we live in a multi-ethnic area, so she sees lots of girls with “down hair” every day. So, I found her some pictures of Beyonce with her hair curly and started pointing beautiful natural women and girls on television and on the street (the Sesame Street “I Love My Hair” video helped too). And as she began to see more hair like hers, she began to appreciate hers more. That and all the compliments she’s always getting don’t hurt either. 🙂 [BBH: Now its a dawg’on WRAP! YES MOMMY!! Hhhhh… THUS Baby Big Hair, so folk can see BIG HAIR can be done, is frotastic and FUN!! *tests mic* Wont somebody come?!?!? Wont there be ONE?!?!? Hhhhh]
[BBH! This is just INSANE. Man she has some HAIR!!]
BBH: Tips for wearing BIG HAIR or fav “quick” styles.
Whenever she’s wearing her hair out and big, I make sure and put a scarf on her when she’s in the house and when we’re riding in the car to cut down on tangles. [BBH: MMhmm. Oh yes!] And i also carry a small spray bottle with me just in case. Our favorite quick style is a high loose puff. Just spritz a little water on it, brush it up high and put a loose ponytail holder, add a flower or headband and go.
[BBH: Ya’ll see that?!?! What manner of curls IS THIS?!?!?]
BBH: Last but not least, anything you would like to share about haircare in general or experiences.
Learning to care for my daughter’s has been a great experience for both of us. She inspired me to go natural after being relaxed for 30 years. It was difficult for me to teach her to love her hair the way it was when it was obvious that I didn’t love my own the same way. Also, it gives us time to spend together, just us two (she has two older brothers) and I love teaching her how to do her hair. She told me this morning that when she grows up she’s going to be really good at twisting hair. 🙂 [BBH: Juuust the two of us….we got BIG HAIR if we tryyyyy, just the two of us, you and I:)]
[BBH: Nuh-uhhh….Can she fit in my pocket?!?]
