Welcome to “Baby Big Hair Blast” where we highlight BIG HAIR artisans and their muses:) Up next to the BBH stage is Mommy Cailin and her BIG HAIR twins, Carmel and Claire! That’s right, its double the fun up in this joint! A very 1st for Baby Big Hair and “We so exciiiiiited”!! EEEK! Look at these sweet babygirls! OHGAAAAAAA! I about LOST it when I got my hands on their froto pics! Hhhhhhhh…. Well, we had the opportunity to “chat” down w/Mommy Cailin and get the 411 on these girls and allllllll that glorious BIG HAIR!! Let’s get this started, shall we?
BBH: What is your hair washing routine?
We usually don’t wash our hair with shampoo and only cowash every 3-4 weeks using a cheap suave conditioner to clean and then use Herbal Essence’s Hello Hydration conditioner for about 20-30 min while I comb out their hair while they are in the tub. Rinse with cool water. Usually we then put on Giovanni Direct Leave-In and coconut oil. [BBH: Herbal Essence is getting its due in these Blasts here lately!! Yes! We pre-poo with Giovanni Direct so we’der Mommy…we’der…]
BBH: What do you find are the challenges for styling the twins hair and how do you over come them?
Time is my biggest challenge. [BBH: TELL SOMEBODY!!] I don’t want them to spend their lives getting their hair done [BBH: Are you reading my MIND?!?!] and with two – I don’t want to spend my life doing their hair. We have a very busy life and I would rather be out enjoying it rather than doing hair. Don’t hate me for saying that. [BBH: Hate you? I APPLAUD YOU MA’AM! For real. Give me some simple protective styling that can flip to BIG HAIR on a dime and I’m straight, cuz *channels Sweet Brown* AINT NOBODY GOT TIME FOR ‘DAT!!]
BBH: How do you entertain the twins when styling their hair?
We have a “hair day” where we start as early as we can and watch movies, have treats all while sitting on my bed which is hair central on hair days. They do really well and rarely do we have any tears. They also now have Kindle Fires so those keep them occupied too. [BBH: Yup, yup! Electronic diversions can be your best friend….]
BBH: What are your fave products these days?
I am too cheap to be a product junkie. I don’t want to spend a lot of money on product only to find out that it doesn’t work. [BBH: Bedda preach!] So we usually stick with Herbal Essence Hello Hydration, good ‘ole extra virgin olive oil [BBH: faithful she is], coconut oil, Giovanni Direct Leave-in and then Organic Root Stimulator Lock and Twist Gel and Snooth-n-Hold Pudding for the braids and twists. I make a mixture of water, EVOO (extra virgin olive oil) and Herbal Essence Hello Hydration that I use daily to spritz on their hair and will every day or two put a dime to quarter size amount of coconut oil on their hair. [BBH: Ahhhh yes, some classics in that joint! Niiiiiice]
BBH: How do the twins feel about their hair?
They love their hair. Claire, the one with more hair does not like to wear her hair in an afro on a regular basis but I think that is because we live in a very lily white state [BBH: Nuh-uh Mommy, not lily white state, smh…] and she doesn’t see many girls with hair like hers not to mention it feels different when not ‘styled’ and it mats up requiring more care. [BBH: Now all jokes a side, that is a challenge even grown folks have. You’ve said nothing but the truth. But we’re getting there as a society. Itty bitty baby steps, but BIG HAIR is getting there…] They really like it when they can see the length and swing it back and forth [BBH: Bedda get more shiiiiiiine than a little bit!]
[BBH: AGHHH! It’s too late… I’m melllltiiiiiiing <>]
BBH: Tips for wearing BIG HAIR or fav “quick” styles?
We usually choose simple hair styles such a twists/twist out and box braids. For the first two weeks of a style we usually leave it down and add bows or headbands. Then the next week or two we put their hair up in ponytails or French braids. They love this stage of the hair cycle for some reason. Carmel’s hair doesn’t mat or tangle as easily as Claire’s so she will rock a fro more often than her sister. I really like her hair with cornrows to the back of her head and then a fro in the back [BBH: jeah!]. It really shows off her cute face. Which is more important to me than the hair style itself. [BBH: I’m diggin’ that routine ours is similar with BIG HAIR toward the end. And AMEN! *queues music* I Am Not My Hairrrrrr]
BBH: Last but not least, anything you would like to share about haircare in general or experiences.
It has been a learning curve to say the least I am an adoptive mom who is white and have two beautiful AA/Native American girls and was a total newbie to curly hair. I am ever grateful for blogs such as yours which have given me hair tips and the like. Also, I wouldn’t trade their hair for anything. [BBH: Awhhhh… Truly honored. EEK! I feel a part of their hair:):):)]
Thanks Mommy Cailin, Carmel and Claire!!! It is a dog’on WRAP!!! I mean cuteness OVAHLOAD!!! Seriously supacute!! Happy lil’thangs:) And can we all extend our fingers to this post and say “BLESS YO FINGAZ MOMMY CAILIN”??!?!? Oo-to-the-wee! I can not imagine. But trust, Mommy’s got BIG HAIR on lock and is SLAMMING it! OK?!? HHHhhhhhh. Love her outlook on not being consumed by hair which is a life lesson for all for all BBH’s. Hats off!
