Welcome to “Baby Big Hair Blast” where we highlight BIG HAIR artisans and their muses:) Up next to the BBH stage is Mommy Katrina and her SUPACUTE daughter Kollage. O_o EEEEK! Lil’PRECIOUS!! *goes off* How yummy is this BABY?!?!? That sweet face surrounded by all that glorious BIG HAIR!!! Well, we had the opportunity to “chat” down with Mommy Katrina and get the 411 on her lil BBH! Lets get to it, shall?
[BBH: Is somebody ti-red??? 🙁 LOL!]
My routine for Kollage is very easy. I wash her hair every other week because my child is a TRUE diva! She cannot stand to get her hair wet. I wash her hair by placing her in the tub with several of her toys to keep her busy. Once she is fully distracted with her toys, I start by using a container and pouring water onto her ringlets. I do not let the water get in her face–because like I said before, Kollage is a diva and will not stand for it [BBH: LOL! *queues Hall and Oats* I can’t go for that (ohhh nooooo, NO CAN DO!), LOL!!]. So, once I have her hair completely drenched with water, I start shampooing her hair and giving her scalp a nice massage. I shampoo her hair with a cleansing shampoo first and then I follow up with a protein shampoo afterwards. The products that I use to shampoo her hair range from Hydratherma Naturals to Jane Carter Solutions [BBH: OWEEE!]. These products really cleanse her scalp, softens her hair, and makes it smell yummy!
Once the shampooing is done, I rinse her hair using the same container until all of the shampoo is gone. Next, I use a detangling conditioner and I allow this to set in her hair for about 10-15 minutes. This gives me time to comb out her hair and massage her scalp in the process. By this time Kollage is now singing, “Tomorrow” [BBH: *looks up and sings* I’ll giiiive my liiife tomorrowww…] from the movie Annie [BBH: Oh, THAT “Tomorrow” *puts church mic away in purse* LOL!!] , The ABC song, and other songs that she has written and produced [BBH: I ain’t mad lawd, get it Kollage!!!]. We normally enjoy a sing-a-long together and hold each note while I detangle her ringlets.
[BBH: Gimme Dem Cheeks!!]
BBH: How do you entertain Kollage when styling her hair?
After hair hair is detangled I rinse her hair out-while still singing along with her to distract her. Kollage HATES when I wash her hair so I have learned to make this process fun and enjoyable for her. Since she loves music-this really helps the process move along smoothly. So, the next step is combing her hair out and plaiting it into 6 braids. By plaiting her hair it– keeps here hair detangled and easy to style. I normally use a leave in conditioner too because her hair is super thick and curly, and a nourishing, thick moisturizer. During the styling process I use a spray bottle with water to keep her hair hydrated. [BBH: Someone had that BIG HAIR on lock!]
[BBH: sweet girl :)]
What do you find are the challenges for styling Kollage’s hair and how do you over come them?
Some of the challenges I face is basically finding the right hair products [BBH: Wellllll…]. I wear my hair natural as well and it is so HARD to find products that work for you. Plus, this endeaveor becomes very expensive [* GOES COMPLETELY OFFFFFF * YESSSSS!]. I still have not found a hair line that can do everything. Some of the products have petroleum, mineral oil, sulfate and parabens and I refuse to use those types of products in our hair. Another major struggle is the SHRINKAGE [BBH: Ah, the magic within]. I am still trying to find a product that minimizes this. Therfore, I am constanty on the internet and checking hair blogs to see what the new great product is!!! This can get very time consuming but we ALL want the best for our hair.
BBH: What are your fav products these days?
Kollage has soft, thick, and curly hair and it yearns for a heavy moisturizer. So far Jane Carter Solutions has great products, but you get so little for the price you pay. However, everything that I have tried so far works wonders and keeps her hair soft and manageable. [BBH: HHhhhmmm, may take them off “side eye” status due to price…]
[BBH: GAAAAAA! That stank face!!!!]
BBH: Tips for wearing BIG HAIR or fav “quick” styles.
Big Hair styles for Kollage are huge Afro Puffs, ponytails, and cute head bands. I use a moisturizer in her hair everytime I style it with a little water. This is a huge tip that works well! I do not have to curl her hair and twist it, her hair has natural shirley temple curls. Therefore, she loves to wear it down. Kollage likes to shake her hair [BBH: Back and forth??] and run her hands through it. SHE ABSOLUTELY LOVES HER HAIR. [BBH: I LOVE HER HAIR!!!!]
BBH: Last but not least, anything you would like to share about haircare in general or experiences.
Last but not least, I want to encourage OUR people to embrace the natural beauty that we have. We have been brainwashed to believe that curly, coarse, and nappy hair is not beautiful. WE ARE BEAUTIFUL because of our beautiful skin hues, the stride in our walk, and the curls that caress our scalps. Please continue to encourage our sisters and brothers to accept their natual beauty and not feel discouraged to embrace it. Thanks Chloe for allowing our beauty to shine. [BBH :”’) aweee… *blushing*]
