Welcome to “Baby Big Hair Blast” where we highlight BIG HAIR artisans and their muses:) Up next to the BBH stage is Mommy Niyya and her dapper lil dude, Amari-Asad. O_O!!!!!!! *gasp* BOY BIG HAIRRRRRRRRRRRRR! ACK!! Be still my heart!!! EEEEK! Of course you know I’m all about my Boy Big Hairz so I was THRILLED to “chat” down with Mommy Niyya and get the 411 on that there handsome lil Man Man. Let’s jump right on in, shall we?
I…. I just CAN’T!
BBH: What is your hair washing routine?
Amari’s hair is washed weekly or bi-weekly depending on his schedule. Our go-to shampoo and conditioning products are TRESemmé Moisture Rich, Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil Creamy Aloe Shampoo and Replenishing Conditioner [BBH: Yup, that’ll do it!]. When leaving his hair loose we finger comb with the conditioner in and work through serious tangles with a large and I mean LARGE-tooth-comb [BBH: AND I MEAN I know EXACTLY what ur talkin’ bout…]. For braids we apply a light hair oil to wet hair, let semi-dry then part and comb through sections braid by braid.
BBH: How do you keep Amari-Asad’s hair moisturized?
Amari has the kind of hair that holds moisture with little effort [BBH: Oh SNAP! For real??]. The trick is mostly protecting it from drying out. This means avoiding extreme temperatures at all cost! Blow-drying with a defuser only when ABSOLUTELY necessary and shoving all that hair [BBH: cuz it’s BIG BABY!} under hats and hoods in the cold winter weather.
BBH: How does Amari-Asad feel about his hair?
Amari loves his long hair and for those who get confused he will proudly correct them, strongly saying, “I’m a boy!” [BBH: That’s right, do NOT get it twisted! Lil’ Cutie Man Man] He gives no trouble to sit and have his hair braided but my little Leo loves to shake his mane when his hair is loose. [BBH: Let my BIG HAIR GOOOOOOO! LOL! Yessss, Love him:)]
Fave styling products these days?
We never use hair grease or heavy oils. Luster’s Pink Lotion, classic light hasn’t failed us yet! [BBH: well if it aint broke…] Great for braids and for a quick pull back we mix it with a smidge of JAM! [BBH: BAY-UM!] around the edges and we are good to go. We have tried a few curling creams and have found that plain old conditioner is still the best for a wash and wear. Our favorite is Hollywood Beauty Olive Cholesterol Deep Conditioning Crème and their olive oil. It’s inexpensive and smells great! [BBH: Fro’Sho!] For shine we can’t live without FANTASIA ic Hair Polisher and the Hair Polisher Mist. [BBH: *slaps own hand* Product Junkie, GET BEHIND THEE!!!]
BBH: What are your thoughts on cutting his hair?
Amari’s hair has never seen scissors, not even for a trim. He is not ready to cut it but when he is, we have decided to donate his hair to Locks of Love. [BBH: Truly amazing and awesome!!]
BBH: That’s right, imma get you!!! GET IN MY PURSE Lil’MAN!!
BBH: Last but not least, anything you would like to share about haircare in general, styling and/or experiences?
When it comes to hair care, less is definitely more. There is no need to spend a lot of money on expensive hair products. It’s a process of trial and error; different things are going to work for different people. Once you find a system that works, stick with it! Consistency is key. If your child is a little model like mine, their hair can take a beating from repeated styling for photo-shoots. Don’t be afraid to do what you know is best for your child and their hair.
