Welcome to “Baby Big Hair Blast” where we highlight BIG HAIR artisans and their muses:) Up next to the BBH stage is Mommy Bernadette and her gorgeously sweet Baby Big Hair, Nia Simone. HHHHHHhhhhhhh…. Have you ever seen such angelic face on a baby?!?!? EEEEEEEK! Some of you may remember this purdle thang from our Frotective Challenge as the Runner Up:
Cutie Patootie!! She’ll certainly win your heart!!! We had the opportunity to “chat down” with Mommy Bernadette and get all the goods on that there angelface and frotastic BIG HAIR!!! Lets get right t it shall we??
What is your hair washing routine?
During the summer months I wash her hair more regularly. The sandbox is my arch enemy!! And we frequent the park quite often. So I’ll wash at least once a week or more if needed. Winter months maybe once every two weeks.
What do you find are the challenges for styling Nia Simone’s hair and how do you over come them?
Detangling!! My girl has 4c in some spots and it can be very frustrating at times. But I’ve learned to keep her hair loosely twisted or braided while washing. That way I won’t have to detangle as much but at the same time still get her hair clean. Using plenty of moisturizer and the ever fab Denman brush makes detangling easier too:) [BBH: Yesssss! I honestly can't remember when I stopped washing BBH's hair "out", but boy does it make a difference in large twisted or braided sections!!! YES!!]
How do you entertain Nia Simone when styling her hair?
I think her next favorite thing to do besides catching frogs is playing Wii or playing on her iPad [BBH: electronic diversions in da'house!!!]. Cartoons and movies keep her still too. But I think what keeps her still and patient is that she is use to it. I can remember purposely sitting her in front of me playing with her hair when she was a baby baby. And every time I’d do it she would sit there longer and longer. Mind you I was only just playing with her hair because she barely had any at the time but doing this with her at that very young age just made it routine. [BBH: Really not tryna go off in this joint but YESSSSSSSS! Get that baby on that LAP lawd!!! BIG HAIR's a comin! Watch out naw!]
[BBH: Hi there sweet girl... Wanna pony? Want some drank?? Think you can fit in my purse?! Yeah? ...OKBYEMOMMY! *jams her in and dashes off* LOL! I jus playin Mommy... I jus playin:)]
What are your fave products these days?
Shea Moisture (SM)! Specifically I use Shea Moisture Organic Raw Shea Butter Moisture Retention Shampoo and condition with Organic Raw Shea Butter Restorative Conditioner [BBH: Both currently on sale at Walgreens, please believe it!]. While her hair is still wet I spray on SM Elixir and pop a shower cap until I get a chance to “do hair”. Lol. This also gives her hair a chance to soak up the moisturizer. Her hair soaks it up! For daily moisturizing I use the SM Curl & Style Milk. For twists I use SM Curling Soufflé. [BBH: So tell me, have you ever tried Shea Moisture???? LOL!! Get it Mommy, bedda work that SM!! We love the Hold & Shine Moisture Mist!]
How does Nia Simone feel about her hair?
She loves to wear it out [BBH: YES! A believer!]. Mostly because it’s more comfortable for her. Wearing it in twist mostly keeps us both happy. She doesn’t have her hair pulled into ponytails and I keep it protected and detangled. Happy daughter = Happy momma [BBH: Amen and AMEN!!! Same here with BBH. BIG HAIR or twists all over (for the most part)]
[BBH: AGAIN!! Seriously?!?!?]
Tips for wearing BIG HAIR or fave “quick” styles.
Honestly I probably couldn’t answer this question if I didn’t participate in the Baby Big Hair Frotective Challenge [BBH: Awhhhh :''')]. The name says it all because it was a challenge! [BBH: OK?!?! LOL!!] For BIG HAIR first and foremost is keeping the hair moisturized. I found that if I slacked just a lil on moisturizing Nia’s hair was a crunchy mess. Spritz Spritz Spritz! My fav “Quick” styles is the two power puffs. Easy to put up and keeps the hair detangled. Was I suppose to answer both? [BBH: You answered just fine Mommy:) And I see you down there!!!]
[BBH: Just.... okay *throws up hands in sweet surrender* And that lil' rope headband framing that BIG HAIR?!?!? *THUD*]
Last but not least, anything you would like to share about haircare in general or hair experiences.
Nia’s hair is so different from mine. My hair is more straight than curly so learning how to keep her hair healthy has been a struggle. But I’ve learned to stop trying to make her hair do something that it wasn’t meant to do…God made her with a beautiful, thick, full, super curly head of hair [BBH: Yes He did!!!]. I think He would be pleased to see her rocking what He gave her:) [BBH: Yes Ma'am!! If it were not so I would have told you!!!] I can only embrace that and try and encourage her to do the same. Nia and I both enjoy looking at Baby Big Hair for new hairstyles. It’s become something that only she and I do together. For now that is well with me, I can only imagine what fun we will have as she gets older…so all in all…we have made “hair” our thing for now. I’d like to thank Baby Big Hair for giving me the opportunity for sharing my Lil love with you all. Chloe rocks! [BBH: AWEEEEE....SSSSTOP IT!!] If you don’t know now ya know! [BBH: BAY-UM!] Be Blessed and Go Win! [BBH: PLEASE BELIEVE IT!!!]
[??!?!!? *goes off** GET OF MY BLOG!!!!]
Thanks Mommy Bernadette and Nia Simone for participating. HHHHHhhhhh….. WHAT A SUGAMUFFFIN!!!! Golly, that girl is beautiful. Is it just me or are her eyes BREATHTAKING?!??! What in da’ wurl???!!? And how ’bout Mommy Bernadette’s fresh and so clean, clean FROTO PICS!!?!?! Golly. Be sure to check out her photo skillz at libellebphotography.com. Mommy Bernadette could not have said it better: “God made her with a beautiful, thick, full, super curly head of hair”. TRUE DAT!!! And to whom much is given, much will be required. Love how Mommy Bernadette doesn’t see BIG HAIR as a burden, but embraces it as the blessing it is. That’s what’s up. Fro’sho! Mommy Bernadette and Nia Simone (name is slammin btw)…
