I was wondering, do you do any braiding styles on your daughters hair. I use to do braiding styles on my 2daughters hair all the time… but I found from the rubberbands on the ends to keep the beads on (cuz my girls love beads) was making their ends insanly dry, and i also felt like the braids were causeing a lot of breakage, mostly in my younger daughter hair cuz she has very fine soft hair with super tight curls. So i have started trying to find ways to do different styles without braiding, and it has been a struggle. On my older daughter i ususally just do 2strand twist but my youngers daughter hair is to soft to hold them so shes been getting pigtails and ponytails but her hair still gets so tangled even in these styles. Well i guess i was just wondering if you did or didnt do braids and what your take is on how healthy cornrows are for the hair! THANKYOU =D

Hi Gretchen! I am SUPALATE on a reply. But I tend not to do a lot of cornrow styles for 2 reasons: 1) I am not the best at it and 2) Braided styles take longer to taken down than twist styles. NOW I will say when BBH’s hair was braided for about 5 weeks this summer her hair grew like a weed. Unbelievable. BUT, they were simple box braids, no cornrows involved. Her ends seemed to have taken a beating from it too. So my take, cornrows and braids are great protective stylse, so long as they are not too tight. I’m still learning that perfect balance. But when I do master those blasted cornrows, I still think I’ll be more prone to flat twisting. Just me. thanks for reading and I hope I answered your question!!

Hi! We consistently use kinky-curly and beautiful curls lines. At 8 months o suggest Kinky-Curly’s toddler line, Tiny Twirls’. Very gentle. Curlz also has a baby line called ‘it’s a curl’ exclusively for babies. I would but Shea butter or something in the back keep the scalp moisturized. But most importantly. Find a satiny piece of fabric to lay beneath the baby’s head in sitting positions for long periods of time. It’s the friction that causes balding. Cotton is the worst. An old silk/satin scarf will do. But be careful how large and loose so that baby does not suffocate! As the hair grows back, try to loosely braid it at night with a butter type product to protect it.

thank you so much for answering…. yes you def helped me =) I have been trying my best to not braid my daughter hair anymore, buuuut then today i let her wear her big hair with a headband and a bow to school and when she got home from school her dad asked if i would braid her hair cuz it seems like i never do her hair anymore cuz i always let her wear twist, twist outs, and fros. and he also said that he feels like by be letting her wear her hair out almost eveyday to school that people probably think i dnt know how to care for her mixed hair. So i gave in a braided it today… i am regreting it cuz im feeling like im undoing all my hard work cuz her hair is so much healthier sense i havent braided over the last 2months. idk i know im only leaving it in the braids for about 2hours and i didnt do them tight buuuuut still! well at least i have a super cute braid out to look forward to =) I just gotta keep working with her dad and get him more use to the idea of her and her lil sister having free big hair! i know its just cuz of the way he was raised, his mom always says to me when she sees the girls fros, um what are you gon do with their hair =/ ugh so annoying! lol! sorry i blabbed on forever! and thank you agian!!!

HHhhhhh. I know exactly what you are talking about. THUS BABY BIG HAIR! It’s my defiance. As long as you know how to detangle and protect it at night, Big Hair can happen and it doesn’t mean you dont know how to style hair when you do it. I used to get that all the time with BBH, especially w/teachers at her school. Like: “do you want me to cornrow her hair?” or even better “You need to cornrow her hair!” I dont see other hair types with their hair constantly braided, so why restrict coily hair to protective styles all day everyday. I get protective styling, but I’m jus’sayin’. Not to put gas in that tank, you gotta have peace in your home, LOL!! I think both your kids have beautiful big hair:)

Thank you so much, and your daughter has very gorgeous hair as well. I cant wait til my girls hair is as long as your daughters. I just with i could figure out how to define their curls more, im still struggling with that. Thats so funny that you say that about the fact that you dont see other hair types always restrictng their hair and braiding it, cuz me and my sister were talking today about hair, and she was saying how she doesnt understand how people say braided hair is healthier hair then hair that is out all the time, she was like i have almost straight hair and your telling me that if i kept it in braids for a week id have nicer hair then leaving it out all the time lol. I am going to continue to try and let my girls wear their hair out and big as much as they want to, and continue to work with their daddy excepting it. I took my younger daugther braids out today and her braid out is so freaking cute i just had to take a bunch of pictures. but thank you for the support. i love to know im not the only one who believes braiding isnt exactly necessary.

No problem. Main thing is to apply defining product on detangled and moisturized (almost near saturated) wet hair. Let air dry. if you can work thru with a Denman brush, the better. Let me know how it goes!!]

okay thank you. well i took her braids out last night and her hair looks gorgeous. i am thinking about getting her ends trimmed soon sense i have recently just stopped using rubberbands and beads all the time her ends are very course and brittle but the rest of her hair is soft and beautiful! what type of defining products would you suggest on 4b hair. everything ive tryed hasnt worked and leaves her hair feeling dryed out. right now i use beemines, coconut oil, and castor oil to lock in moisture =)
