I painted “Little Friends” (which is 22″x22″) for our little girl’s nursery – we are still waiting for a referral, adopting from Ethiopia. This painting was inspired by a picture taken by one of my clients, Margret Arnadottir. These two little friends are sitting on a bench in the sunshine, innocently and contently playing with pebbles. When I was a little girl I LOVED playing with pebbles and rocks. This painting was a bit of an adventure, because I painted on a different kind of paper – hot press instead of cold press. The paint reacted a lot different than I was used to, and it was much harder to get a clean wash. As a result, this painting looks much more watercolor-y than a lot of my other work. I had a lot of fun creating the little girl’s wonderful big head of curly hair… painting a ‘fro is tricky, but I think I’m getting the hang of it.

Sisterly friends…My two 7 year old daughters have been together since they were newborns… They share a family and not ethnicity…Kinky Curly gets us through the morning and out the door especially with a new baby brother who needs it too!

Besides the cute tutus and her afro, I like that there’s friendship and sharing, not segregation. This is a great image of humankind accepting and loving one another. I think all children need to see images like this so that they can know that beyond black, there’s other ethnicities, and that we should love each other… afterall, we all bleed red!

I love the symbolism. This painting shows that kids are so innocent and accepting of others. We’re the ones that show them differences, and not that it’s a bad thing. But the differences we teach our children some times are cruel.
