Welcome to “Baby Big Hair Blast” where we highlight BIG HAIR artisans and their muses:) Up next to the BBH stage is Mommy Brandyce and her golden lil’ lady Ashtyn.  And yes, I’d like to go there (ode to Stevie, ya’ll aint ready)!  OWEEEEE!  Sweet BIG HAIRZ alive this one is TOO CUTE!!  Well, we had the opportunity to chat down with Mommy Brandyce to get the skinny on that bitty BIG HAIR!!  Lets dig in, shall we??

[BBH:  WHOAAAA!  That’s some BIG HAIR!!]

BBH: What is your hair washing routine?
I wash Ashtyn’s hair once a week or once every week in a half. I will wash it more often if she gets something in her hair like sand or leaves. One day we went to the park and she had a full afro, she ended up with sand, twigs and leaves in her hair. It was so funny. Like her own little bird’s nest. To wash her hair I have to just dump water over her head. She hates water in her eyes. We have to use a tear free shampoo because of it.  [BBH:  LOL!  Yes, BIG HAIR is quite the catcher!!]

[BBH:  How MUCH is that Baby Big Hair in the window??  DOLLBABY!!!]

BBH: What do you find are the challenges for styling Ashtyn’s hair and how do you over come them?
The biggest challenge I face combing her hair is the fact that it curls up so tightly. I love it, but it can be difficult when styling and parting.  [BBH: HHHhhhhhhh.  BIG HAIR don’t come easy…]

What are your fave products these days?
Right now I love using good old fashioned water in a spray bottle, Olive Oil Girls Moisturizing Styling Lotion, and Twisted Sista 30 Second Curl Solution. I change products as soon as one runs out.  [BBH:  Well you certainly sound grounded and product junkie free.  Good job Mommy!]

[BBH:  There’s that smile:)]

BBH: How do you entertain Ashtyn when styling her hair?
I entertain her by putting her favorite cartoon on. She loves Iron Man the cartoon, Super Why [BBH:  To the rescue!], and Bubble Guppies [BBH:  Line up everyone outsiiiiiiiide Girl!!!  Those are classics right there.  I thought My BBH was the only girl that was about her supaheroes.  Too cute!!]

[BBH:  Daaaaaaang.  This baby is HURTING THEMMMMMM..]

BBH: How does Ashtyn feel about her hair??
Ashtyn loves her hair!!! [BBH:  Yey!] She is so excited every time I finish combing her hair. She has to go see how she looks. She will look at me and say “I go see how pretty I are”  [BBH:  Awweeeee!! Yes Honey, Go’Head Baby and see how purdyl  you is:)]

[That’s IT!! *points to purse*  NOW GET IN THERE!!  LOL!  O_o]

BBH: Tips for wearing BIG HAIR or fave “quick” styles.
I think the only “tip” I have is to just wear it and love it! My favorite “quick” hair style for her is the Princess Tiana bun. I wet her hair, add some product and brush it all up to the top of her head, put a pony tail holder on it, twist and tuck. Tah Dah!!!!  [BBH:  And it is perfection. Please believe it!!  So cute on her too...]

BBH: Last but not least, anything you would like to share about haircare in general or hair experiences.?
I would like to tell all the parents out their that are scared of big hair to just embrace it and love it. It makes a statement and people love it. Don’t straighten your child’s hair because it is easier to maintain, easier doesn’t mean better.  [BBH:  UHP!  You bedda preach up in this piece *goes off and throws shoe*]  Teach them how to care for their hair. Let them get their hair wet and play. Teach them to love their hair!!!  [BBH:  *queues music*  I believe BIG HAIR is the future… Fro it well and let it lead the way…  *key change, headsnap, face camera*  The greatest BIG HAIR of AAAA *cough* AALLLLLLLLLLL, is easy to achieeeeeeve. Learning to love, BIG HAIR, is the greatest….LOOOOOOOVE of alllllll.. *Toni Braxton stare and fades to black*]

[BBH: ^^^?!??!?^^^^]

Thanks Mommy Brandyce and Ashtyn for participating!!  Lawd that baby’s hair is like Candehhh (owwww), LOL! For real…..all fluffy n’stuff!!  And is she not just a button and FIERCE all at the same time?!??!?   Lovin’ Mommy’s philosophy of embracing BIG HAIR.  She’s right.  Many folk decline BIG HAIR because it’s work.  So glad this Mommy keeps it movin.  Mommy Brandyce and Ashtyn….

Go’Head Baby!

Welcome to “Baby Big Hair Blast” where we highlight BIG HAIR artisans and their muses:) Up next to the BBH stage is Mommy Brittany and her little flower Nevaeh-Michelle.  EEEEK!  Such a purdyl lil’thang she is with all that delightful like BIG HAIR!!!  Well, we had the opportunity to “chat down” with Mommy Brittany and get the mots on that there lil’mamas and all that hurrrrr.  Let’s get to it shall we?

[BBH:  Somebodeh say shrinkaaaaage!!]

BBH: What is your hair washing routine?
During the week, we strive for protective styles- mostly two strand twist and sleek buns. We try to wash every week to every other week. Mostly, dpending on what her is telling me [BBH: Oooo, BIG HAIR whisperer are you???]. This routine usually alternates between shampoo, condition, deep condition or co-wash, deep condition- banding and styling.

[BBH:  Awee….Hi pretty gurrrrl:)]

BBH: What do you find are the challenges for styling Nevaeh Michelle hair and how do you over come them?
Time is probably our biggest challenge during styling. She’s 5yrs old and often wants to do some super-detailed style that we don’t have time for. Also, we love searching the net for “hairspiration”, the challenge is trying to remember fab styles that we say we’ll try later. [BBH: YESSSSSSSSS!  OO-oo.. try “pinning” them on Pinterest, we’re on there:)]

BBH: How do you entertain Nevaeh-Michelle when styling her hair?
During our “curly cleansing sessions” we do lots of talking (she does most of the talking), I make sure the DVR is ready with her favorites like A.N.T. Farm, Shake It Up, and Phenius & Ferb. She recently transitioned from NickJr to Disney shows almost overnight…they grow so fast. Sometimes she draws or plays educational games on her VTech Innotab.  [BBH:  You aint playin’ over there!!!!]

[BBH: Juicy twists in da’houuuse!]

What are your fave products these days?
I try to alternate our product use also; this includes Shea Moisture‘s Conditioning Milk, Curl Enhancing Smoothie or Beautiful Textures Tangle Taming Shampoo and Moisture Butter. Also, Organic Root Stimulator‘s Olive Oil DC and Extra Virgin Coconut Oil (EVCO) when we use LOC (liquid, oil, cream) method. Also, the Denman brush is our best friend. [BBH: Well its a wrap Mommy! Sounding good right about now. OWEE!  Product Junkie get behind thee!!]

BBH: Tips for wearing BIG HAIR or fave “quick” styles?
“Pretty curly-whirly, twisty-twirly curlies”…Nevaeh-Michelle’s words on her big curly hair. Her hair gets a lot of attention, which is fine, but of course every now and then someone might hurt her feelings – and those are the moments I use to teach and help her understand her natural beauty and uniqueness. [BBH: HHhhhhh.  Why lawd, why??!?!  Good job Mommy:)]

[BBH: Lawd she is so purdyl and cute!  GIMME DAT BABY!!]

BBH: Last but not least, anything you would like to share about haircare in general or hair experiences?
Usually two strand twists gives her favorite kind of big hair. Always twist the front last to decide on your part or the way you want the hair to fall. [BBH:  Yes!!] Our fave quick styles are chunky two strand twists with a braided root and sleek buns [BBH:  OOOooooo].  Thank you sooo much for the opportunity!!! And thanks for creating your site/blog =)

[BBH: ^^^?!??!^^ Fantabulous curls on a beautiful girl!!]

THANK YOU Mommy Brittany and Nevaeh-Michelle for participating!!!  OWEE this child is SUPASWEEEEEEET!  Golly.  And that BIG HAIR is GORG!  Did you see those chunky monkeh pics?!?! Please believe it.  Love how Mommy is on top of that moisturizing, knowing what works for that baby, and is taking the time to educate and encourage her in those “awkward” situations.  That’s what’s up.  Mommy Brittany and Nevaeh-Michelle….

Go’Head Baby!

Welcome to “Baby Big Hair Blast” where we highlight BIG HAIR artisans and their muses:) Up next to the BBH stage is Mommy Stacie and her cutiepie guy Cullen.  GAAAAAAAA!  “Anybody that know me” already know how I go >>IN<< on our big BOY HAIRZ!! And what a handsome lil’man man Mr. Cullen IS!!!  HHhhhhhh.  Well, we had the opportunity to chat down with Mommy Stacie and get the mots on that lil’fella and his glorious BIG HAIR!  EEK!  Let’s dig in shall we??

CUTIE!!

BBH: What is your hair washing routine?
We shampoo once a week with SheaMoisture Curl & Shine Shampoo.  I use SheaMoisture Restorative Conditioner once a week and detangle while he’s in the tub.  Once or twice during the week (depending on how sweaty and dirty he is!), I will do a co-wash with the SheaMoisture or Kinky Curly Knot Today.  [BBH:  So, have you ever heard of SheaMoisture??  LOL!]

kids natural hair

BBH: How do you keep Cullen’s hair moisturized?
After I wash or detangle, I work SheaMoisture Curling Souffle Gel through his wet hair.  In the mornings, I spray his hair with a mix of water and Taliah Waajid Protective Mist Bodifier and work it through with my fingers.  I use SheaMoisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie to style his hair for the day.  If he needs a refresher during the day, I’ll use the Taliah Waajid/water mix and some of the SheaMoisture Curl & Style Milk.  [BBH:  GURL!!  You ain’t playin over there!! YES!  Love TW products too!!  Hhmmmm, never tried that one:/  ]

^^How can you deal with this much CUTENESS everyday?!?!? GOSH!!!^^

BBH: How does Cullen feel about his hair?
He loves his big hair!  I did 2 strand twists for the first time and after about a day he said “I want my big hair back!”.  He loves to see  people on TV and in person with naturally curly hair like his.  He’ll say “they have hair like me!”.  [BBH: YES THEY DO!!  And pray thee more!!!  Hhhhhhh…. MAN have times changed. We’re getting there…]
kids natural hair Mr. Dapper Dude!

BBH: Fave styling products these days?
I am in love with anything SheaMoisture!  [BBH:  Noooooooo! 🙂] The smell is wonderful and his hair really responds to the products. [BBH: Co-signed!!!]  I’ve tried so many products over the last 3 years and the SheaMoisture lines are the best fit for his hair.  [BBH:  Well its a dag’on WRAP then aint it Mommy?!?!  Give it up for SheaMoisture ya’ll!!]

GET>IN>MY>POCKET!! #whowantsapony?

BBH: What are your thoughts on cutting his hair?
I will keep it big until he decides that he wants it cut.  [BBH:  YYYYYES! *does dance*]  He doesn’t mind the detangling and styling routine and is happy to show off his big hair.  I’ll ask him occasionally if he wants short hair and he always says no.  I’m sure the day will come when he wants it short and I’ll go to the barber shop and cry in the corner while they cut it [BBH:  And I’d be right there eatin’ carpet with you too, TRUST!!!  “Oh Heavenly Fatha NOOOO *echoes*!! ” LOL!!].  It’s his hair and I want him to be proud of it whether it’s short or big!  [BBH:  Aweee, good Mommy:)]

kids natural hair

Last but not least, anything you would like to share about haircare in general, styling and/or experiences?
As an adoptive parent, it has been trial and error over the past 3 years trying to come up with the haircare routine that works best for his hair.  I have curly hair, so I was familiar with the basic care of curls, but  I’m still trying to learn all I can to help keep his hair healthy.  I am always critical of myself and I worry that people will judge him based on my styling skills…I don’t want people to look at him and say he must have a white mama!  🙂  [BBH: Awhh Mommy!  Nooooo, never that! Shooo…. They may be asking YOU for the deets  with  allllll that healthy BIG HAIR I see over there…] I want him to be proud of his hair and his heritage.  [BBH: YES! Our battle cry!!  AWESOME SAUCE!  You rock!!]

kids natural hair

^^^?!?!? *Goes COMPLETELY OFF!!*  meltiiiiiing….

Aweee, thank you Mommy Stacie and Cullen for participating!! SERIOUSLY.  Way too cute. I mean just…SUPACUTE!  Isn’t his hair all  supathick, GORG and delightful like?!?!?  *swoons* HHhhhhh.  The world needs more Big Boy Hairz…  Now back to Mommy Stacie.  Perfect example of trial and error.  See my friends, sometimes a little product junkie tendency (speaking to myself here), can be a GOOD thing.  Amen?!?! Keep trying and you’ll find what works. Lovin how intentional Mommy is with lil’ man man from day one understanding that its not just about BIG HAIR, it’s about that baby underneath embracing and loving himself top to bottom, inside out.   THAT is beautiful and a mother’s love, and THAT should be the only thing folk see.  BIG props to Mommy on the BIG HAIR moisturizing and styling tip!  Mommy Stacie and Cullen…
Go’Head Baby!

Welcome to “Baby Big Hair Blast” where we highlight BIG HAIR artisans and their muses:) Up next to the BBH stage is Mommy Mylea of Happily Nappy-Naturally Yours and her sweet lil’princess “MJ”.  OHGAAA, what a precious moo moo!!!  No doubt MJ’s BIG HAIR has got Mommy “workin’, Workin’ WORKIN’ DAY AND NIGHT!”  (get it?  MJ?  smh..)  Well, we had the chance to “chat” down with Mommy Mylea and get the deets on that SUPACUTE baby and alllllll that BIG HAIR!   ACK!  Let’s dig right in shall we??

[BBH:  Purdy lil baby!:)]

BBH: What do you find are the challenges for styling MJ’s hair and how do you over come them?
MJ’s hair type 3A – 3B, very defined curls and silky. Just a spritz of water and some Shea Moisture Curl Milk and we are good to go for quick ponytail syles. I dont have very many issues with her hair but sometimes I get frustrated because it’s so soft. It doesn’t hold braids very long, but other than that her hair is very manageable with the right product and a wide tooth comb. [BBH:  Ahwlwayz!] We mostly do bantu knot-outs and cute little zig-zag parts for ponytails, and for special occasions a big decorative head band with the back out! [BBH:  Cuz BIG HAIR is special:)]

BBH: How do you entertain MJ when styling her hair?
The Sprout Channel is the most amazing thing. Dora comes in close second. Sometime she wants to play “Elmo Loves ABC’s” on my my iPad. Those three things distract her for about…..oh…. 5 minutes, lol! [BBH:  RRRRRRRRIIIGHT!, LOL!]

[BBH:  Hi there Big Sis!!  Tell your baby brother I’ll see him in a few inches:)]

BBH: What are your fave products these days?
My fave products are Shea Moisture Deep Conditioning masque (for a leave-in or bi-weekly deep conditioning after washing), Shea Moisture Coconut and Hibiscus Hair Milk (for shiny, defined curls) and good old fashioned water! [BBH: well if it ain’t brrrroke!!!] She likes to spray her hair herself with my spray bottle. It cracks her up! [BBH:  You bedda train up a BBH!!, oweee!]

BBH: How does MJ feel about her hair?? Oh Honey, MJ loves her hair! She is a very prissy and dainty little girl unlike myself at that age. I was a serious tomboy. She loves dresses and the colors pink and purple.  I teach her that her natural hair is beautiful and she gets tons of compliments literally everywhere we go!  And everyday after I do her hair, she runs to our floor length mirror by the steps to check herself out! smh She always asks me “Mommy, I’m a princess?” and I say “Yes Darling” every time 😀 [BBH:  You sure are MJ!  A BBH Princess!!]

[BBH:  *channels Beyonce* Finally, that Big Hair’s TOP!  top, Top, TOP, T-AHHHP, that BIG HAIR’s on TOP!]

BBH: Tips for wearing BIG HAIR or fave “quick” styles.
Water, water, water! We are made up of more than 75% water so its essential in almost all that we do. [BBH:  So tell me how you feel about water..:)] We drink a lot of water in my house and we use it on our hair too. I never style my daughter’s hair when its completely dry. I always spritz a little water on her hair before de-tangling and styling. Also oil the scalp 2-4 times a week. We use Doo Gro Growth Oil about three times a week because we both have dry hair.  [BBH: Oweee BIG HAIR pah-leeease DOO GRO!  YESTH!! Noted:)].

[BBH:  SSSSSTOP!  Gimme Dat Baby!!! LOVIN that “out” style!]

BBH: Last but not least, anything you would like to share about haircare in general or hair experiences.
I’d just like to share that being natural isn’t just a look, it’s a lifestyle! I was blessed to have such a beautiful little girl with a wonderful head of curly hair.  And because I am natural myself and take such pride in it, it’s only right I pass those beliefs on to my little ones, especially my daughter because I want her to believe that she is gorgeous and that there is nothing wrong with her hair as it grows out of her head!  [BBH:  That’s right Mommy, HHhhhhhhhh. Heart it…]

^^^^?!?!?!? ^^^^ GET.IN.MY.PURSE!

Thank you Mommy Mylea and MJ for participating.  OWEEE! Isn’t that baby just SUPASWEET and CA-UUUUUUUTE!  Gimme ‘dos CHEEKS!  Smooshy wooshy BABY!!  GAAAA! And her hair is so thick, full and GORG!!  Lil’BBH Princess:)  I think its beautiful that she knows she’s beautiful.  Kudos to Mommy for setting the tone for loving all that BIG HAIR.  Please be sure to stop my Mommy Mylea’s Happily Nappy-Naturally Yours blog for more details on her and MJ’s haircare routine and the natural lifestyle.  “LIKE” her on FB and tell her we sent ya!  Mommy Mylea and MJ…

Go’Head Baby!

Welcome to “Baby Big Hair Blast” where we highlight BIG HAIR artisans and their muses:) Up next to the BBH stage is Mommy Daisy and her sweet little girl cherub, Chamberlyn. O_o…OHGAAAA!! Doesnt that name + that precious face just COME FOR YOU?!?!? HHhhhhhhh. Seriously. TOO.MUCH.CUTENESS goings on here!!! Well ,I had the opportunity to “chat down” with Mommy Daisy and get the 411 on that gorgeous BABY and tha supasweet BIG HAIR! *shrills* Let’s get to it, shall we?

BBH: What is your hair washing routine?
We wash twice a week and grease with coconut oil. I usually put it in two-strand twists after each wash. If we get lucky her Aunt will cornrow it for us. [BBH: We Are Family!… I got Baby Big Hair and ME! *insert Mariah Carey finger* Yeah-Yeah-Yeaaaah!]

BBH: Little girl…if you don’t put those cheeks ^^^ in my hand…

BBH: What do you find are the challenges for styling Chamberlyn’s hair and how do you over come them?
The most challenging part of styling Chamberlyn’s hair are the tangles, because its sooooo curly. We battles tangles EVERYDAY. [BBH: Say it aint so lawd…]

BBH: How do you entertain Chamberlyn when styling her hair?
I entertain Chamberlyn when styling her hair by putting on one of her favorite shows (Yo Gabba Gabba [BBH: Now.Its.Time.To.Dance!, Dora the Explorer, [BBH: DORA!] Mickey Mouse Clubhouse [BBH: Hot Dog, Hot Dog, Hot Diggity DOG!] and engaging her about what’s happening on the show to distract her from getting her hair done. She hates getting that hair combed! [BBH: Aweee little BIG HAIR…. It’s o-tay:(]

BBH: *giggles* You’re ssssilly! Come here….IMMA GET YOU!!!

BBH: What are your fave products these days? We love Miss Jessie’s Baby ButterCreme. The smell, it doesnt leave a “gauky goo”, and it keeps her curls nice for a few days. [BBH: EEEK! Long lasting curls?!?!?! *googles* LLLLLet’s start with the 2 oz….]

BBH: How does Chamberlyn feel about her hair??
Although she hates to get it done she loves the final product and always says “Take a picture of me”. [BBH: Cuz she’s FLY! Aint nobody playin’ with that baby! Shhhoooo….]

BBH: You lil’ DOLLFACE!! Get in my pocket…

BBH: Tips for wearing BIG HAIR or fave “quick” styles.
Fave quick style is poof ball [BBH: BAY-UM!], and my tips would be keep your hair moisturized! [BBH: Fro’sho!]

BBH: Last but not least, anything you would like to share about haircare in general or hair experiences.
Overall, I just want to teach my daughter to love the skin she is in. To love the type and texture of hair that she has, not want to conform to typical ideals of beauty and understand that the features she has as an African-American are just as beautiful as any pictures she sees of other people in magazines. [BBH: TRUE DAT! Let the doors open…will there be one??]

^^?!??!?!?!??!^^ *THUD*

Thank you Mommy Daisy and Chamberlyn for participating! OO-to-the-WEE this child is SUPACUTE. Hair? CHECK! Eyes? CHECK! Smooshy cheeks? CHECK! That’s it! IT’S A WRAP FOLKS!!!! HHHhhhhhh. What a pumkin. This Baby Big Hair may not like “hair time”, but she loves her BIG HAIR at the end of the day and that’s what matters most, AMEN? Lovin’ Mommy Daisy’s approach to instilling pride in that baby. See that beauty inside and out, ya’mean?!?! HHHHhhhh. Mommy Daisy and sweet little Chamberlyn…

Go’Head Baby!
