Bonjour!!  Sooooooo excited to have the opportunity to review and share with you the new kids line by Carol’s Daughter (CD) “CD4 Kids”.  EEEEEEK!  It’s been a grip lawd since our last review so Baby Big Hair and I were looking forward to it.   We were provided with a package of  CD4 Kids Detangler, Shampoo and Conditioner. Yup. Noice! BBH had been rocking our signature protective style, all over 2 strand twists, for about 5 weeks.   So the timing could not have been more PERFECT. Alrighty then, let’s get right to it, shall we?!? First, a little something about Carol’s Daughter for those who may not be familiar with this reputable line of hair and body products (from the CD website):

Carol’s Daughter has been known for its natural beauty products for more than 20 years.
Each hair, skin and body indulgence collection is infused with rare ingredients that bring out
your natural beauty.

Hear Lisa tell her story in her own words….

Don’t you just love passionate people!?!?!  Hhhhhhh….

*This post is my honest and unbiased opinion. The subject products were provided to Baby Big Hair with no incentive to offer a favorable review; however,  the related youtube video is commission based*

CD4KIDS DETANGLER
(see ingredients list here):
20140110-001520.jpg

*Disclaimer*  Note BBH’s hair had been in a protective style for 5 weeks.  Product was not used on freshly washed hair or even damp hair.

  • Price: $12.00 for 8.5 fl. oz. bottle. This is consistent with other natural organic hair care products, maybe a few dollars more(?).  Little goes a long way
  • Smell: SupaLight smell.  Not at all overwhelming
  • Consistency: clear liquid, touch of cloudiness.  Light midst pump

I started with spraying  a few twists at a time and separating each twists with my fingers.  I then further separated the hair, taking extra care where hair was locking.  Her twists were successfully removed and detangled with plenty product left to spare.  Not a lot of slip mind you, but it got the job done. See for your self:

CD4KIDS SHAMPOO (see ingredients list here):
20140110-001502.jpg

  • Price: $12.00 for 8.5 fl. oz. bottle. Again, for my product junkies out there, this is consistent with other natural organic hair care products.  You do not need to have a heavy hand with this, a little goes a long way
  • Smell: Supalight pleasant smell
  • Consistency: Clear and thick

After sectioning off her hair (cuz I awhhlwayz wash her hair in sections lawd – shoooo….thats a lot of HUR!  LOL!), I wet her hair and applied.  Good amount of lather and the shampoo felt moisturizing in her hair.  Similar to the Detangler, not a lot of slip, but moisturizing while cleansing her hair.  As noted we had 5 weeks of product piled onto her hair. This shampoo left her hair feeling very clean and there was no build up left on the scalp.

CD4KIDS CONDITIONER (see ingredients list here):
20140110-001511.jpg

  • Price: $12.00 for  an 8 fl. oz. tube. Consistent with other  natural organic hair care products out there.  Quarter size amount will do for each section.
  • Smell: SupaLight pleasant smell
  • Consistency: Very creamy and thick

I applied the conditioner to her freshly washed hair.  Instructions were to leave in hair for 3-5 minutes then rinse, but as noted above, I do everything in sections and I like to let conditioner “set” in the hair.  Prolly had conditioner in her hair for good 20 minutes or so.  While working thru, I further detangled her hair where needed. Some slip, just enough to make it easy to work thru. I rinsed out with no residue on her hair or scalp.

 BIG HAIR THOUGHTS...

PROS

The smell of all three products is very faint and light and I did not have to use a TON of product to get the job done (THANKYA!).  How many of us know how essential that is when making such an investment on BIG HAIR (can my product junkies say AMEN?!?!?  The Shampoo cleansed really well the first go ’round and didn’t strip her hair.  I really like how the  Shampoo and Conditioner were easy to rinse out of her hair. BIG HAIR hair types need gentle products that do not build up, word.  Now turn to your neighbor and say “It doesn’t build up”!  MMm-hey! Yaaaaaasssss!

CONS

I just need a little more slip lawd.   While the Detangler and Conditioner certainly get the job done, both could use a tad more slip, especially for all that BIG HAIR.   The Conditioner is moisturizing, but is not a “Leave-In” (*disclaimer* nor does CD hold it out to be), which BBH’s hair has gotten accustomed to over the years.  Not necessarily a con, just noting the Conditioner does not function like a ‘Leave-In’.  If you like to condition prior to applying a Leave-In, this may work well for you.

IN SUMMARY

I really like the Shampoo (very rich and clarifying). And the Detangler and Conditioner certainly get the job done, but I was left feenin’ for a “Leave-In” and/or styling product. Hopefully, those are in the works!!!  A defining creme or gel would be a nice addition to the line too. I will say BBH’s hair was SUPAsoft after washing and conditioning and the styling products I did use (although a different brand) attached to her hair like BUTTAH.  I can see this line working really well on its own for medium to loose curl types or for oily hair types that need a good cleanser and/or conditioner that leaves -0- residue in the hair.  For more reviews on various hair types search the #cd4kids hashtag in social media.  Note, Carol’s Daughter is sold online and at its stores (see store locator here), select Macy’s, Sephora and Ulta stores.  See if CD4Kids is for you.  Many thanks to Carol’s Daughter for the opportunity to  review and  share CD4Kids with our readers and followers.

See. THIS RIGHT HERE is why Baby Big Hair came to be!! We’ve all heard the story by now. Talented and beautiful 12 year old Vanessa VanDyke was initially told to cut or straighten her BIG HAIR or be expelled then faced a subsequent ultimatum over Thanksgiving break:

“We are not asking her to put products in her hair or to cut her hair,” read a statement sent to a local television station. “We are asking her to style her hair within the guidelines according to the school handbook.”

Well, well, well, SOMEBODY got the message via social media that threatening the natural state of ones hair, ESPECIALLY ON THE HEAD OF A CHILD is not ok. But it STILL wasn’t clear enough I see. They were still asking this baby to ‘style her hair’. Ma’am/Sir, BIG HAIR IS A STYLE!! What I hear loud and and clear from the undertones of administration’s statements and/or the alleged claims is that Ms. VanDyke’s hair is unkept, unruly and needs to be ‘tamed’, either by cutting or styling. THAT ^^^ is their response to this baby’s cry for help from being bullied by her peers over her hair?!??
Hhhhhhh….**beside myself**  Thankfully, this sweet Baby Big Hair returned to school this week with her untouched crown of gloreh!!  See the local news segment here:

video platformvideo managementvideo solutionsvideo player

That’s more LIKE IT!! When will the day come when this is not news? When will the day come when natural BIG HAIR dunned by children is an acceptable style left to the discretion of parents and not the judgement of society?? Ladies and gentlemen, BIG HAIR is beautiful. BlG HAIR is natural. BIG HAIR is a lifestyle. WHY.CANT.BIG.HAIR.JUST.BE?!?? Young Vanessa conveys it best in her response to the school’s criticism of her natural BIG HAIR:

“It says that I’m unique.” [BBH: Yes it does sweetie!!!] “First of all, it’s puffy and I like it that way. I know people will tease me about it because it’s not straight. I don’t fit in.”  Hhhhhhh… Can I just give a BIG shout out to her parents who have done an AWESOME job instilling self worth and love in that beautiful child!! YES!!!

Thank you Vanessa VanDyke and family for taking a stand for what is naturally your right and for representing Baby Big Hairz everywhere. Email the school and send words of encouragement and support of this BBH here. Vanessa VanDyke…

Welcome to “Baby Big Hair Blast” where we highlight BIG HAIR artisans and their muses:) Up next to the BBH stage is Mommy Brandyce and her golden lil’ lady Ashtyn.  And yes, I’d like to go there (ode to Stevie, ya’ll aint ready)!  OWEEEEE!  Sweet BIG HAIRZ alive this one is TOO CUTE!!  Well, we had the opportunity to chat down with Mommy Brandyce to get the skinny on that bitty BIG HAIR!!  Lets dig in, shall we??

[BBH:  WHOAAAA!  That’s some BIG HAIR!!]

BBH: What is your hair washing routine?
I wash Ashtyn’s hair once a week or once every week in a half. I will wash it more often if she gets something in her hair like sand or leaves. One day we went to the park and she had a full afro, she ended up with sand, twigs and leaves in her hair. It was so funny. Like her own little bird’s nest. To wash her hair I have to just dump water over her head. She hates water in her eyes. We have to use a tear free shampoo because of it.  [BBH:  LOL!  Yes, BIG HAIR is quite the catcher!!]

[BBH:  How MUCH is that Baby Big Hair in the window??  DOLLBABY!!!]

BBH: What do you find are the challenges for styling Ashtyn’s hair and how do you over come them?
The biggest challenge I face combing her hair is the fact that it curls up so tightly. I love it, but it can be difficult when styling and parting.  [BBH: HHHhhhhhhh.  BIG HAIR don’t come easy…]

What are your fave products these days?
Right now I love using good old fashioned water in a spray bottle, Olive Oil Girls Moisturizing Styling Lotion, and Twisted Sista 30 Second Curl Solution. I change products as soon as one runs out.  [BBH:  Well you certainly sound grounded and product junkie free.  Good job Mommy!]

[BBH:  There’s that smile:)]

BBH: How do you entertain Ashtyn when styling her hair?
I entertain her by putting her favorite cartoon on. She loves Iron Man the cartoon, Super Why [BBH:  To the rescue!], and Bubble Guppies [BBH:  Line up everyone outsiiiiiiiide Girl!!!  Those are classics right there.  I thought My BBH was the only girl that was about her supaheroes.  Too cute!!]

[BBH:  Daaaaaaang.  This baby is HURTING THEMMMMMM..]

BBH: How does Ashtyn feel about her hair??
Ashtyn loves her hair!!! [BBH:  Yey!] She is so excited every time I finish combing her hair. She has to go see how she looks. She will look at me and say “I go see how pretty I are”  [BBH:  Awweeeee!! Yes Honey, Go’Head Baby and see how purdyl  you is:)]

[That’s IT!! *points to purse*  NOW GET IN THERE!!  LOL!  O_o]

BBH: Tips for wearing BIG HAIR or fave “quick” styles.
I think the only “tip” I have is to just wear it and love it! My favorite “quick” hair style for her is the Princess Tiana bun. I wet her hair, add some product and brush it all up to the top of her head, put a pony tail holder on it, twist and tuck. Tah Dah!!!!  [BBH:  And it is perfection. Please believe it!!  So cute on her too...]

BBH: Last but not least, anything you would like to share about haircare in general or hair experiences.?
I would like to tell all the parents out their that are scared of big hair to just embrace it and love it. It makes a statement and people love it. Don’t straighten your child’s hair because it is easier to maintain, easier doesn’t mean better.  [BBH:  UHP!  You bedda preach up in this piece *goes off and throws shoe*]  Teach them how to care for their hair. Let them get their hair wet and play. Teach them to love their hair!!!  [BBH:  *queues music*  I believe BIG HAIR is the future… Fro it well and let it lead the way…  *key change, headsnap, face camera*  The greatest BIG HAIR of AAAA *cough* AALLLLLLLLLLL, is easy to achieeeeeeve. Learning to love, BIG HAIR, is the greatest….LOOOOOOOVE of alllllll.. *Toni Braxton stare and fades to black*]

[BBH: ^^^?!??!?^^^^]

Thanks Mommy Brandyce and Ashtyn for participating!!  Lawd that baby’s hair is like Candehhh (owwww), LOL! For real…..all fluffy n’stuff!!  And is she not just a button and FIERCE all at the same time?!??!?   Lovin’ Mommy’s philosophy of embracing BIG HAIR.  She’s right.  Many folk decline BIG HAIR because it’s work.  So glad this Mommy keeps it movin.  Mommy Brandyce and Ashtyn….

Go’Head Baby!

Oweee!  Well, we had a ton of fun  during the Frotective Challenge.  It also was a great time of sharing among all the BIG HAIR artisan mommies (shout out to ma’gurlz!!).  One the coolest tips I learned was from Mommy Megan of Hair-Raising Adventures called “Zig Zag Banding”.  OHGAA  It’s genius!  Generally speaking, Banding is the technique used to stretch hair.  There are many o’bloggers that use this technique.  In fact, Beads Braids and Beyond has a lovely post on Banding that I often share with our readers and has a permanent place in our Hair Guide.  But honestly, Banding with numerous bands/ponytail holders never worked for us.  Maybe cuz I never invested in a ton of holders to do it the right way *shrugs shoulders*. When we do stretch hair, its typically through twisted styles or Ghana Plaits with weave thread.  BUT THIS RIGHT HERE!?! Oh I can get down with this, TRUST.

ZIG ZAG BANDING – Quick Overview

Sombodeh turn to you neighbor and say, where my hose at?!?!? LOL!  I jus’ playin. But on the real, you need tights or hose to cut into 1 inch or so circular strips.  Now this right here should make you go IN!!! Do you realize how many strips you can get out of a pair of adult hose or tights??  No more purchasing tons those “good” ouchless bands  so not to snag your baby’s hair.  This is a cost effective alternatice for stretching. Megan used old tights of her daughters.  Tights/hose are PERFECT for BIG HAIR. The lycra is smooth, stretchy and wont snag the hair.  Heck, since the Challenge I’ve been using strips of hose as ponytail holders, mmhhmm.  Check it:

In this pic I double wrapped the hose first, due to how much it stretches, then wrapped at the base. VIOLA!  You have a “not so tight” pony that can stay in her hair without pulling or snagging; the grip is just right.  BBH’s hair doesn’t dry out at the base either.  Anywho, stay with me…. The Zig Zag Banding  steps are easy:

  • Cut hose/tights into 1 -2 inch circular strips (see my above pic)
  • Wrap the base of the pony a few times, similar to how you would a rubber band
  • When the base is secured, keep sliding down in the same wrapping fashion until the pony looks like this:

  • Next, gently remove after desired time or once hair has completely dried and you’ll get this:

GLOREH!!!  OHGAAAAA!  I love this.  Separate those bad boys for a “twist out” look. You can also wrap the knots closer together for more smoothed/straighter hair and from there getsa stylin.  At any rate, you’ll be amazed at the how much those little strips will strecth, plus, you can REUSE THEM!! Get you some fun color tights and you can band with style hon!  You could even make colorful snag free headbands from stretched strips- prolly wanna work with adult hose/tights for that though so not to be too tight on ur baby’s head (thank me later).  I can not wait to try Zig Zag Banding on BBH, but just HAD to share in the meantime!!  Check out Mommy Megan’s original  Zig Zag Banding post here, which has more amazing pics and  an instuctional video.  This  ^^^ will get cop’t, PLEASE BELIEVE IT.  Send pics if you try it. EEEEEK!

Go’Head Baby!
