See. THIS RIGHT HERE is why Baby Big Hair came to be!! We’ve all heard the story by now. Talented and beautiful 12 year old Vanessa VanDyke was initially told to cut or straighten her BIG HAIR or be expelled then faced a subsequent ultimatum over Thanksgiving break:

“We are not asking her to put products in her hair or to cut her hair,” read a statement sent to a local television station. “We are asking her to style her hair within the guidelines according to the school handbook.”

Well, well, well, SOMEBODY got the message via social media that threatening the natural state of ones hair, ESPECIALLY ON THE HEAD OF A CHILD is not ok. But it STILL wasn’t clear enough I see. They were still asking this baby to ‘style her hair’. Ma’am/Sir, BIG HAIR IS A STYLE!! What I hear loud and and clear from the undertones of administration’s statements and/or the alleged claims is that Ms. VanDyke’s hair is unkept, unruly and needs to be ‘tamed’, either by cutting or styling. THAT ^^^ is their response to this baby’s cry for help from being bullied by her peers over her hair?!??
Hhhhhhh….**beside myself**  Thankfully, this sweet Baby Big Hair returned to school this week with her untouched crown of gloreh!!  See the local news segment here:

That’s more LIKE IT!! When will the day come when this is not news? When will the day come when natural BIG HAIR dunned by children is an acceptable style left to the discretion of parents and not the judgement of society?? Ladies and gentlemen, BIG HAIR is beautiful. BlG HAIR is natural. BIG HAIR is a lifestyle. WHY.CANT.BIG.HAIR.JUST.BE?!?? Young Vanessa conveys it best in her response to the school’s criticism of her natural BIG HAIR:

“It says that I’m unique.” [BBH: Yes it does sweetie!!!] “First of all, it’s puffy and I like it that way. I know people will tease me about it because it’s not straight. I don’t fit in.”  Hhhhhhh… Can I just give a BIG shout out to her parents who have done an AWESOME job instilling self worth and love in that beautiful child!! YES!!!

Thank you Vanessa VanDyke and family for taking a stand for what is naturally your right and for representing Baby Big Hairz everywhere. Email the school and send words of encouragement and support of this BBH here. Vanessa VanDyke…

Welcome to “Baby Big Hair Blast” where we highlight BIG HAIR artisans and their muses:) Up next to the BBH stage is Mommy Brittany and her little flower Nevaeh-Michelle.  EEEEK!  Such a purdyl lil’thang she is with all that delightful like BIG HAIR!!!  Well, we had the opportunity to “chat down” with Mommy Brittany and get the mots on that there lil’mamas and all that hurrrrr.  Let’s get to it shall we?

[BBH:  Somebodeh say shrinkaaaaage!!]

BBH: What is your hair washing routine?
During the week, we strive for protective styles- mostly two strand twist and sleek buns. We try to wash every week to every other week. Mostly, dpending on what her is telling me [BBH: Oooo, BIG HAIR whisperer are you???]. This routine usually alternates between shampoo, condition, deep condition or co-wash, deep condition- banding and styling.

[BBH:  Awee….Hi pretty gurrrrl:)]

BBH: What do you find are the challenges for styling Nevaeh Michelle hair and how do you over come them?
Time is probably our biggest challenge during styling. She’s 5yrs old and often wants to do some super-detailed style that we don’t have time for. Also, we love searching the net for “hairspiration”, the challenge is trying to remember fab styles that we say we’ll try later. [BBH: YESSSSSSSSS!  OO-oo.. try “pinning” them on Pinterest, we’re on there:)]

BBH: How do you entertain Nevaeh-Michelle when styling her hair?
During our “curly cleansing sessions” we do lots of talking (she does most of the talking), I make sure the DVR is ready with her favorites like A.N.T. Farm, Shake It Up, and Phenius & Ferb. She recently transitioned from NickJr to Disney shows almost overnight…they grow so fast. Sometimes she draws or plays educational games on her VTech Innotab.  [BBH:  You aint playin’ over there!!!!]

[BBH: Juicy twists in da’houuuse!]

What are your fave products these days?
I try to alternate our product use also; this includes Shea Moisture‘s Conditioning Milk, Curl Enhancing Smoothie or Beautiful Textures Tangle Taming Shampoo and Moisture Butter. Also, Organic Root Stimulator‘s Olive Oil DC and Extra Virgin Coconut Oil (EVCO) when we use LOC (liquid, oil, cream) method. Also, the Denman brush is our best friend. [BBH: Well its a wrap Mommy! Sounding good right about now. OWEE!  Product Junkie get behind thee!!]

BBH: Tips for wearing BIG HAIR or fave “quick” styles?
“Pretty curly-whirly, twisty-twirly curlies”…Nevaeh-Michelle’s words on her big curly hair. Her hair gets a lot of attention, which is fine, but of course every now and then someone might hurt her feelings – and those are the moments I use to teach and help her understand her natural beauty and uniqueness. [BBH: HHhhhhh.  Why lawd, why??!?!  Good job Mommy:)]

[BBH: Lawd she is so purdyl and cute!  GIMME DAT BABY!!]

BBH: Last but not least, anything you would like to share about haircare in general or hair experiences?
Usually two strand twists gives her favorite kind of big hair. Always twist the front last to decide on your part or the way you want the hair to fall. [BBH:  Yes!!] Our fave quick styles are chunky two strand twists with a braided root and sleek buns [BBH:  OOOooooo].  Thank you sooo much for the opportunity!!! And thanks for creating your site/blog =)

[BBH: ^^^?!??!^^ Fantabulous curls on a beautiful girl!!]

THANK YOU Mommy Brittany and Nevaeh-Michelle for participating!!!  OWEE this child is SUPASWEEEEEEET!  Golly.  And that BIG HAIR is GORG!  Did you see those chunky monkeh pics?!?! Please believe it.  Love how Mommy is on top of that moisturizing, knowing what works for that baby, and is taking the time to educate and encourage her in those “awkward” situations.  That’s what’s up.  Mommy Brittany and Nevaeh-Michelle….

Go’Head Baby!

Welcome to “Baby Big Hair Blast” where we highlight BIG HAIR artisans and their muses:) Up next to the BBH stage is Mommy Stacie and her cutiepie guy Cullen.  GAAAAAAAA!  “Anybody that know me” already know how I go >>IN<< on our big BOY HAIRZ!! And what a handsome lil’man man Mr. Cullen IS!!!  HHhhhhhh.  Well, we had the opportunity to chat down with Mommy Stacie and get the mots on that lil’fella and his glorious BIG HAIR!  EEK!  Let’s dig in shall we??

CUTIE!!

BBH: What is your hair washing routine?
We shampoo once a week with SheaMoisture Curl & Shine Shampoo.  I use SheaMoisture Restorative Conditioner once a week and detangle while he’s in the tub.  Once or twice during the week (depending on how sweaty and dirty he is!), I will do a co-wash with the SheaMoisture or Kinky Curly Knot Today.  [BBH:  So, have you ever heard of SheaMoisture??  LOL!]

kids natural hair

BBH: How do you keep Cullen’s hair moisturized?
After I wash or detangle, I work SheaMoisture Curling Souffle Gel through his wet hair.  In the mornings, I spray his hair with a mix of water and Taliah Waajid Protective Mist Bodifier and work it through with my fingers.  I use SheaMoisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie to style his hair for the day.  If he needs a refresher during the day, I’ll use the Taliah Waajid/water mix and some of the SheaMoisture Curl & Style Milk.  [BBH:  GURL!!  You ain’t playin over there!! YES!  Love TW products too!!  Hhmmmm, never tried that one:/  ]

^^How can you deal with this much CUTENESS everyday?!?!? GOSH!!!^^

BBH: How does Cullen feel about his hair?
He loves his big hair!  I did 2 strand twists for the first time and after about a day he said “I want my big hair back!”.  He loves to see  people on TV and in person with naturally curly hair like his.  He’ll say “they have hair like me!”.  [BBH: YES THEY DO!!  And pray thee more!!!  Hhhhhhh…. MAN have times changed. We’re getting there…]
kids natural hair Mr. Dapper Dude!

BBH: Fave styling products these days?
I am in love with anything SheaMoisture!  [BBH:  Noooooooo! 🙂] The smell is wonderful and his hair really responds to the products. [BBH: Co-signed!!!]  I’ve tried so many products over the last 3 years and the SheaMoisture lines are the best fit for his hair.  [BBH:  Well its a dag’on WRAP then aint it Mommy?!?!  Give it up for SheaMoisture ya’ll!!]

GET>IN>MY>POCKET!! #whowantsapony?

BBH: What are your thoughts on cutting his hair?
I will keep it big until he decides that he wants it cut.  [BBH:  YYYYYES! *does dance*]  He doesn’t mind the detangling and styling routine and is happy to show off his big hair.  I’ll ask him occasionally if he wants short hair and he always says no.  I’m sure the day will come when he wants it short and I’ll go to the barber shop and cry in the corner while they cut it [BBH:  And I’d be right there eatin’ carpet with you too, TRUST!!!  “Oh Heavenly Fatha NOOOO *echoes*!! ” LOL!!].  It’s his hair and I want him to be proud of it whether it’s short or big!  [BBH:  Aweee, good Mommy:)]

Last but not least, anything you would like to share about haircare in general, styling and/or experiences?
As an adoptive parent, it has been trial and error over the past 3 years trying to come up with the haircare routine that works best for his hair.  I have curly hair, so I was familiar with the basic care of curls, but  I’m still trying to learn all I can to help keep his hair healthy.  I am always critical of myself and I worry that people will judge him based on my styling skills…I don’t want people to look at him and say he must have a white mama!  🙂  [BBH: Awhh Mommy!  Nooooo, never that! Shooo…. They may be asking YOU for the deets  with  allllll that healthy BIG HAIR I see over there…] I want him to be proud of his hair and his heritage.  [BBH: YES! Our battle cry!!  AWESOME SAUCE!  You rock!!]

^^^?!?!? *Goes COMPLETELY OFF!!*  meltiiiiiing….

Aweee, thank you Mommy Stacie and Cullen for participating!! SERIOUSLY.  Way too cute. I mean just…SUPACUTE!  Isn’t his hair all  supathick, GORG and delightful like?!?!?  *swoons* HHhhhhh.  The world needs more Big Boy Hairz…  Now back to Mommy Stacie.  Perfect example of trial and error.  See my friends, sometimes a little product junkie tendency (speaking to myself here), can be a GOOD thing.  Amen?!?! Keep trying and you’ll find what works. Lovin how intentional Mommy is with lil’ man man from day one understanding that its not just about BIG HAIR, it’s about that baby underneath embracing and loving himself top to bottom, inside out.   THAT is beautiful and a mother’s love, and THAT should be the only thing folk see.  BIG props to Mommy on the BIG HAIR moisturizing and styling tip!  Mommy Stacie and Cullen…
Go’Head Baby!
